Mother and infant daughter die after boat capsizes near Liberty Island

A vessel carrying 14 people overturned near Liberty Island in New York Harbor on Saturday night, resulting in two deaths. The New York Police Department was called to the scene at 10:55 p.m. A 27-year-old woman identified as Sara Sanchez and her 5-month-old daughter Antonella Garcia were located and declared deceased on arrival at NYU Langone Hospital, according to CBS News reporting. Both lived in the same home in College Point, Queens. Police did not specify the relationship between the two victims.

Twelve people had already been rescued from the water when NYPD arrived. A Sea the City boat initially saw the capsized vessel and helped 11 people out of the water. The remaining survivors were taken to a local hospital and are reported to be in stable condition with minor injuries, per CBS News.

Manuel Hernandez, 46, of New York, who is identified as the boat's captain, was arrested on Sunday on 13 counts of reckless endangerment. Authorities are investigating whether the vessel was operating illegally as a charter. According to CBS News reporting, an illegal charter is defined as any passenger-for-hire vessel operation that lacks Coast Guard credentials, safety equipment and inspection certificates.

Captain Doreen McCarthy, the Coast Guard Sector New York commander, expressed sadness over the loss and gratitude for the heroic actions of partner agencies and the Good Samaritan vessel, according to CBS News. Police said they are investigating the cause of the deadly incident. The exact cause of the capsizing has not been determined.
