Casualty distribution across provinces has also varied by report: some accounts cite 24 deaths in Manggarai and 17 in East Manggarai, while later BBC reporting citing BNPB deputy official Abdul Muhari puts the figures at 25 and 20 respectively, with additional deaths in Sikka, Ende, Nagekeo, and West Manggarai provinces. Landslides have cut off the Trans-Flores Highway and disabled communications in some areas, delaying rescue teams reaching isolated communities.

Elsewhere, violence closer to home drew heavy coverage. A shooting rampage across three locations in rural Missaukee County, Michigan killed five people Friday, including a mother and her teenage son; the suspect, 39-year-old Chad Hickman, was found dead. A 13-year-old girl, shot four times, survived and called 911; she was in critical condition Friday and stable by Saturday. Separately, five people were shot outside a residence hall at Virginia State University in Ettrick early Saturday morning. One victim, a 21-year-old man, remained in critical condition while four others aged 17 to 23 sustained non-life-threatening injuries. After a manhunt lasting more than 12 hours, 19-year-old Camron Harris of Henrico, not a VSU student, was found hiding in a dormitory closet and arrested; he faces four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of using a firearm in a felony, and is held without bond. Police had initially described multiple suspects at large, and reporting notes that whether Harris acted alone remains an open question. A separate shooting in a Lexington, Kentucky park Saturday evening killed one person and wounded four, including a 14-year-old and a 4-year-old; no arrest has been announced.

On the legal and policy front, U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston lifted a stay that had blocked the Trump administration from terminating Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals. Burroughs found that plaintiffs had presented a compelling case and would suffer irreparable harm, but said a June Supreme Court ruling in Mullin v. Doe, which bars judicial review of certain non-constitutional TPS termination decisions, constrained her authority to keep blocking the action. Sources at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services put the number of Somali nationals with TPS at 2,471, with 1,383 more applications pending.
