Police obtained felony warrants for four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Authorities stated Harris may face more charges. He is being held without bail at Chesterfield County Jail.

The university implemented a lockdown following the incident, which has since been lifted. VSU announced that "VSU police will maintain an increased presence on campus as the investigation continues." Virginia State University is a state-supported historically Black university located in Ettrick, Virginia, about 25 miles south of Richmond.
