UEFA Announces World Cup Boycott Threat Over FIFA Privatization Deal

UEFA, Europe's primary soccer governance body representing 55 member associations, announced on July 30, 2026, that its members will boycott both the men's and women's World Cup unless FIFA abandons its plan to sell minority stakes in the tournament to private investors, according to NPR reporting.

FIFA's proposal would establish a company to manage all commercial rights to its tournaments, including the World Cup, and sell minority ownership stakes in that company to private investors. UEFA framed the issue as a matter of fundamental principle. "Some things are simply too important to sell," the organization stated, per NPR. "The FIFA World Cup belongs to football. It always will. And so long as Europe has a voice, it will never be for sale." UEFA argued that external investor ownership would reshape competition governance: "The moment external investors acquire ownership interests in FIFA competitions, football changes forever. Commercial return becomes a permanent obligation. Investor expectations become a daily pressure," the statement said. UEFA also contended that investor stakes would redirect decision-making away from the sport's interests. "Every decision on the international calendar, every decision on competition formats and every decision shaping the future of football is no longer driven by what best serves the game, but by what best serves shareholders," UEFA said.

England's Football Association endorsed UEFA's position, stating, "We stand shoulder to shoulder with our European colleagues and fully support the collective view," according to NPR.

Concacaf, the soccer governing body for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, expressed concerns but stopped short of calling for a boycott. Concacaf's 41 member associations raised objections to what it described as "the lack of due process surrounding the proposal, the artificially short deadline imposed, and the absence of any review or approval by the relevant FIFA governance bodies," per NPR.

FIFA defended the proposal, stating that it would retain all decision-making power across all its tournaments and that the plan involved selling only a portion of the commercial venture, not tournament control itself, according to NPR. The 2030 FIFA World Cup will mark the tournament's centenary, celebrating 100 years since the inaugural edition in Uruguay in 1930. The 2030 tournament will be staged mainly in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, with centenary matches scheduled in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay.
