Minneapolis shooting kills 2, wounds 6 others including 3 police officers

A gunman opened fire in a downtown Minneapolis apartment building on September 3, 2026, killing two people and injuring six others, including three police officers. The suspect, identified by CBS News as 35-year-old Carlton Neal Johnson, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The shooting occurred at the Shoreline Plaza complex, located at 15 East Grant Street in downtown Minneapolis. Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson said during a news conference that police were familiar with the suspected shooter but did not confirm their identity publicly. Of the six injured, three were police officers. Four additional officers experienced adverse effects after exposure to an unknown airborne substance, according to Peterson. Court documents and an eviction notice obtained by CBS News reveal a documented pattern of escalating conduct in the months before the shooting. Johnson signed a lease at Shoreline Plaza in March 2025. Beginning in January 2026, the eviction notice lists six incidents. On March 2026, Johnson allegedly assaulted a resident on the premises. On June 11, Johnson entered the management office and openly displayed a firearm to staff members. Around the same time, he made multiple statements to residents that he had obtained a new gun. Two days after June 11, Johnson flashed his gun to people on a nearby sidewalk. Following these incidents, Johnson contacted apartment management and requested a second chance. A law firm representing the building sent Johnson a letter instructing him not to display a gun to others on the building premises and to comply with Minnesota conceal and carry laws. Despite this directive, the eviction complaint states Johnson "continued to breach the lease and last chance directive." On June 19, Johnson made concerning verbal statements about using a gun to a security officer while lifting his shirt and showing his firearm. On June 25, Johnson walked around the block with his firearm visible and brandished a firearm at another resident in the common area. Police were called, and Johnson attempted to bribe staff to reveal who had made the report. Court documents show Johnson was subject to a restraining order. According to CBS News, the 27-year-old mother of Johnson's child reported that between March 6, 2023 and March 10, 2023, he sent over 120 text messages with vulgar insults and threats from 10 different phone numbers. Johnson had been evicted from his apartment on the morning of September 3, the day of the shooting. Chief Peterson said that when pressed about what prior interactions police had with Johnson and why he had not been arrested, he did not have those details. He stated: "Our officers have shown that they are willing and they do respond and run towards gunfire when others are running from it, and it is absolutely horrific." Court documents indicate Johnson had been scheduled for a trial and had a hearing set for September 11. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension announced it would provide an update on the investigation on Thursday afternoon.
