Suspect arrested in Virginia State University shooting that wounded five

Camron Harris, 19, from Henrico, Virginia, was arrested following a 12-hour manhunt after a shooting at Virginia State University in Ettrick left five people wounded early Saturday morning, according to Fox News and BBC World reporting.

Police responded to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at approximately 1:28 a.m. on Saturday and discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds outside VSU residence halls. Harris was found hiding in a closet inside one of the campus dorm buildings, per Fox News. Harris is not a student at Virginia State University. Only one of the five victims is a university student, according to Fox News; the ages of the other four range from 17 to 23.

One victim, a 21-year-old man, remains in critical condition, per BBC World. The other four victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Police obtained felony warrants for four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, according to Fox News reporting. Harris is being held without bail at Chesterfield County Jail and may face additional charges, per Fox News.

Early in the investigation, local officers told BBC World that they believed more than one shooter was involved. Harris's arrest as a single suspect suggests that initial assessment may have changed, though the sources do not provide an explicit clarification on this point. A campus lockdown at VSU, which has more than 5,000 students, has since been lifted, per BBC World. Classes for the new term were set to begin on Monday and campus dormitories opened for returning students on Friday.

VSU is located approximately 25 miles south of Richmond.
