Suspect arrested in Virginia State University shooting that left five injured, one critically

Camron Harris, 19, of Henrico, Virginia, was arrested after a shooting at Virginia State University early Saturday morning that wounded five people, one of them critically, according to BBC News reporting.

Officers responded to the incident outside a residence hall at about 1:28 a.m. local time Saturday, per BBC. Harris was found hiding in a closet on campus and is not a student at the university. All five victims were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds. A 21-year-old man remains in critical condition, while the other four victims, aged 17 to 23, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Only one of the five victims was a student at VSU, per BBC reporting.

VSU is located south of Richmond, the state capital, and is one of the country's historically black universities, with more than 5,000 students. The shooting occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, just as the university prepared for the new academic term. Classes were set to begin Monday, and campus dormitories had opened for returning students on Friday.

A discrepancy emerged in the initial police response. Lt James R Lamb of Chesterfield County Police Department told BBC on Saturday that authorities believed there to be multiple assailants involved in the shooting. However, Harris's arrest suggests the investigation may have narrowed the focus to a single suspect. The official record does not yet clarify whether Harris is believed to have acted alone, whether other suspects remain under investigation, what charges he faces, or the circumstances and motive behind the shooting.
