Settlers Attack Mosques and Property in West Bank Following Deadly Clash

Israeli settlers set fire to two mosques and vandalized vehicles and agricultural land in West Bank villages following a deadly confrontation that killed four Palestinians and two Israelis near the village of Tal, Palestinian officials reported.

According to BBC reporting, a mosque under construction in the village of Qusra was set on fire overnight, with settlers spray-painting the word "revenge" on its walls. In a separate incident, settlers set fire to another mosque in the village of Kour and sprayed slogans on its walls. Palestinian reports also documented vandalized cars, stolen property, and hate graffiti spray-painted on walls across the two villages.

The attacks follow a clash two days prior near Tal in which four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed. Both sides accused the other of provoking the violence in that initial confrontation, according to BBC reporting, leaving the sequence of events contested.

The Israeli military stated that troops were sent to Qusra and that police would investigate and collect evidence, according to the BBC. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to take "powerful action" in response to the Tal incident, including possible demolition of homes belonging to two Palestinians he alleged were involved.

These attacks are part of a broader pattern. Since the Tal clash on Friday, Palestinians say multiple settler attacks have struck villages across the West Bank. According to BBC reporting, there has been a sharp increase in settler attacks in recent months, escalating following the Hamas-led attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The UN reports that 1,114 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the start of the Gaza war, the vast majority by the Israeli Defense Forces, with at least 35 deaths involving settler attacks. The UN also reports 41 Israelis, including civilians and security personnel, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations in the West Bank.

Israel has built hundreds of settlements housing 700,000 Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem since occupying the territory during the 1967 Middle East war, according to BBC reporting. Approximately 3.3 million Palestinians live in the West Bank alongside Israeli settlers. Israeli settlements are illegal under international law. The situation in the West Bank had already deteriorated before October 7, 2023, and settler violence has drawn international condemnation but shown little sign of being reversed, per the BBC.
