In the Middle East, the fractured state of a recently announced disarmament framework became starkly visible when Israeli military aircraft struck Gaza City, Khan Younis, and Deir el-Balah on consecutive nights, killing at least 13 people according to Palestinian officials. These strikes came days after Hamas formally accepted a disarmament plan requiring the Palestinian group to surrender its weapons to the Board of Peace, established under President Trump's 20-point framework. Trump stated Friday that Israel was "very happy" with the proposed agreement. Yet Israeli officials have continued military operations and publicly rejected key elements of the accord.

A fundamental disagreement erupted over whether US-Iran negotiations are occurring. President Trump announced Sunday that the United States and Iran would hold new talks Monday afternoon after calling off what he described as massive military strikes. Iran's Foreign Ministry immediately denied on Monday that any direct talks with the US were planned or underway. Trump said the pause came amid "perimeters of a deal" involving shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and "ultimately, the denuclearization of Iran," but Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated flatly: "We currently do not have negotiations with America."

In financial markets, the US Treasury and Japan's Ministry of Finance jointly intervened in currency markets Friday to halt the yen's slide to a 40-year low, marking the first joint intervention between the two countries since 2011.
