King Harald V of Norway dies at 89 after 35-year reign

King Harald V of Norway died on Friday, August 28, 2026, at age 89 at the National Hospital in Oslo following treatment for a rare blood condition. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, automatically succeeded him as King Haakon VIII. Harald reigned for 35 years and was Europe's oldest reigning monarch.

King Harald V of Norway died Friday, August 28, 2026, at 6:35 a.m. local time at the National Hospital in Oslo. He was 89. The king had been hospitalized for treatment of a rare blood condition. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, succeeded him automatically as King Haakon VIII.

Harald reigned for 35 years, from January 17, 1991, until his death. He was Europe's oldest reigning monarch. He is survived by his wife of almost 58 years, Queen Sonja, their daughter Princess Märtha Louise, their son King Haakon, and six grandchildren.

Harald was born on February 21, 1937, on the Skaugum estate near Oslo. He was Norway's first king born in Norway since King Olav IV in 1370. When Harald was three years old, Nazi Germany invaded Norway. His mother fled with her children across the border to Sweden, and they traveled to the United States at the invitation of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Norwegian royals were frequent guests at the White House during their time in America. At age six, Harald christened new warplanes at a Norwegian air base in Canada. The family returned to Norway in June 1945, shortly after the war ended.

Prince Harald became crown prince in 1957 at age 20. He studied social science, history and economics at Balliol College in Oxford from 1960 to 1962. Like his father King Olav V, an Olympic champion sailor in 1928, Harald loved the sea and sailboats. He represented Norway at three Olympic Games and skippered his yacht to gold in the World Championships in 1987. He declared his competitive sailing days over in 2022.

Harald met Sonja Haraldsen at a party. She was the daughter of a businessman. The crown prince waited nine years before he was allowed to marry her, as King Olav feared the marriage would weaken Norway's still-young monarchy. His father finally gave consent, and the couple wed in Oslo Cathedral on August 29, 1968. Norwegians greeted the wedding with jubilation. The couple had two children: Crown Prince Haakon and his older sister, Princess Märtha Louise. Harald's choice to marry a commoner opened the path for his own two children to marry commoners, and, according to BBC reporting, "helped bring an end to a very male-dominated Royal Family."

When Harald's father fell ill in 1990, the crown prince became regent. Harald ascended to the throne when King Olav died on January 17, 1991. When he assumed the throne on January 21, 1991, Harald adopted the same motto his father and grandfather had used: "All for Norway."

During his reign, the Norwegian Constitution was altered in 1990 to allow the first-born child, regardless of gender, to take precedence in line of succession, though the change was not applied retroactively. This meant Haakon continued to take precedence over his sister.

In July 2011, Harald faced his greatest challenge as king. Neo-Nazi Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people in bomb and gun attacks across Norway. The attack killed eight people with a car bomb in Oslo and 69 others, mostly teenagers, at a youth camp on the island of Utøya. Harald gave a televised address the next day and, weeks later, delivered a speech empathizing with victims and their families. He appealed to Norwegians to support each other and not "let fear take over." He said: "I remain convinced that the belief in freedom is stronger than fear. I remain convinced in the belief of an open Norwegian democracy and society. I remain convinced in the belief in our ability to live freely and safely in our own country."

In 2016, Harald gave an impassioned speech supporting diversity of religion, ethnicity and sexual orientation. He said: "Norwegians are girls who love girls, boys who love boys, and girls and boys who love each other." He added that many Norwegians have emigrated from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Poland and other countries and that they "believe in God, Allah, the universe and nothing." According to ABC News, the speech was unexpected and generated significant attention.

Harald was one of the initiators of the Norwegian branch of the World Wide Fund for Nature and served as president of the Norwegian chapter for 20 years. During his reign, the Norwegian monarchy became more egalitarian and transparent with finances and health. The royal family modernized under his leadership while maintaining their symbolic role. Like other royal houses in Europe, Norwegian monarchs serve largely ceremonial functions, enjoying celebrity status while real power rests with an elected parliament in the democracy of 5.5 million people.

Harald reigned during an oil-and-gas-driven economic boom in his country. When Denmark's Queen Margrethe, his second cousin, abdicated in January 2024, Harald stated he stood by the oath he made when ascending the throne: "It lasts for life." He declined to follow the path of other aging monarchs who have abdicated in recent years.

In recent years, the royal family faced health challenges and scandal. During a 2024 vacation in Malaysia, Harald was fitted with a pacemaker. During a February 2026 holiday on the Spanish island of Tenerife, he dealt with a skin infection. In early 2026, renewed scrutiny emerged over Crown Princess Mette-Marit's connections with the late financier Jeffrey Epstein. Mette-Marit is not accused of any wrongdoing in relation to those connections. She apologized for the situation she put the royal family in, part of a broader apology for all those she had "disappointed." Separately, Marius Borg Høiby, Mette-Marit's eldest son from a previous relationship before she met Haakon, was convicted of rape and sentenced to four years in prison. Høiby has no royal titles or official duties.

Harald's daughter Princess Märtha Louise gave up royal duties after raising eyebrows by saying she could communicate with angels and becoming engaged to an American man who identifies as a shaman. During his reign, the Norwegian royal family suffered relatively few of the scandals that have plagued their peers in the Swedish and British royal families, per ABC News.

The royal flag on the roof of the palace has been lowered to half-mast. In the 24 hours leading up to his death, members of the royal family had visited the king, and crowds had laid flowers at the palace.

The key fact

King Harald V of Norway, who broke royal tradition by marrying a commoner and modernized the monarchy toward transparency and diversity, died at 89 after 35 years as Europe's oldest reigning monarch.

The Bottom Line

King Haakon VIII assumes the throne at a moment of transition in Norwegian society and across Europe. His reign begins with a modernized monarchy that his father built and with the expectation that he will continue the tradition of symbolic leadership in a strong democracy. The coming weeks will reveal how the new king balances continuity with his own vision for the role.
