19-year-old arrested in Virginia State University shooting; five injured

Camron Harris, a 19-year-old from Henrico, Virginia, was arrested following a shooting at Virginia State University that wounded five people early Saturday morning, according to BBC News reporting. Harris is not a student at the university.

Officers responded to the incident outside a residence hall at about 01:28 local time on Saturday, per BBC News. Harris was found hiding in a closet on campus. Five people were taken to local hospitals with gunshot wounds. Only one of the five victims was studying at VSU, according to BBC News. A 21-year-old man remains in critical condition; the other four victims, whose ages range from 17 to 23, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, per BBC News.

Early in the investigation, local officers suggested the incident may have involved more than one shooter. Lt. James R. Lamb of Chesterfield County Police Department told BBC News that authorities believed there to be multiple assailants involved, though Harris's arrest as a single suspect creates uncertainty about whether additional suspects remain at large.

VSU, one of the country's historically black universities, has more than 5,000 students, according to BBC News. Classes for the new term were set to begin on Monday, and campus dormitories opened for returning students on Friday. Historically black institutions were created to provide higher education to disenfranchised African Americans, who were otherwise prohibited from attending most colleges, per BBC News.
